Jose Rizal: not an American-made hero

Although Governor Taft suggested the Philippine Commission to choose a national hero, it was not he who appointed RIZAL to be the one.

It was further reported that “in the subsequent discussion in which the rival merits of the revolutionary heroes (Marcelo H. del Pilar, Graciano Lopez Jaena, Jose Rizal, General Antonio Luna, Emilio Jacinto, and Andres Bonifacio —O.) were considered, the final choice - now universally acclaimed a wise one — was Rizal. And so history was made.”
- Free Press of December 28, 1946

It was not the Americans who chose Rizal as the National Hero but the Filipino members of the Civil Commission ( Pardo de Tavera, Legarda, and Luzuriaga ).
