'Who couldn't be happier' than to find something WICKED showing up one day in your curious hours of boredom? Yes, I was surprised when the official facebook page of WICKED THE MUSICAL posted a link to an article about a possible Wicked Animated Film with the cartoon sketches by Disney animator and visual development artist Minkyu Lee (The Princess and the Frog, Adam and Dog, Frozen).
Lee revealed on his Tumblr blog sketches of the characters from Broadway's Hit Musical 'Wicked':
From the comment threads under the article, I came across a Youtube video which was uploaded a year ago featuring an animated storyboard version of Wicked's 'Defying Gravity' made by Disney's Heidi Jo Gilbert. Gilbert and Lee happened to be best friends long before they got their job from Disney. Making an animated version of the Broadway Musical started as their college joke, according to Gilbert, as she and Lee, along with Jennifer Hager, were also huge Wicked fanatics back then in CalArts. Because they just can never let go of that Wicked idea, Minkyu had drawn those fascinating character sketches for one of his portfolios, while Gilbert made a storyboard animation of Wicked's most defining song number, Defying Gravity, which is lauded by many Wicked fans who share this dream project:
And just how powerful these curiosities can make, I found another blog which revealed a Wicked Leak from a Tumblr blog featuring an unauthorized sneak preview of the all-new animated miniseries event (originally in GIF format). As a huge Wicked fan myself, I immediately downloaded the files and sequenced it to make an 11-second teaser, with the song NO GOOD DEED, for this Youtube video:
WE ALL KNOW THAT HALF OF THE WICKED FANS WILL DEFINITELY WANT A WICKED MOVIE BASED ON THE HIT BROADWAY MUSICAL, AND DISNEY WOULD BE WORKING FOR IT, WITH GILBERT AND LEE ON BOARD. BUT WE ALSO KNOW HOW GREAT THE ORIGINAL MAGUIRE NOVEL OF WICKED IS (FROM WHERE THE MUSICAL IS DERIVED). AFTERALL, AN ALL NEW APPROACH ON THIS SPELLBINDING MUSICAL/BOOK WILL JUST SATISFY EVERYONE. THE SERIES OF WICKED-RELATED MEDIA ABOVE PROVES THAT. THEY'RE JUST SO 'WONDERFUL'.
EDIT: The Alphabet Channel (ABC) confirms an 8-Hour Animated Miniseries based from Gregory Maguire's "Wicked", a re-imagining of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz"
